System #1 is up and running. What we’ve created is a small, self-contained, solar powered aquaponics farming system that can survive in very remote locations. Water is pumped up from a lower tank with a stock of 80 tilapia to the top grow bed. As the top bed fills, it filters water into the lower grow beds that each contain rice. And finally the water floods the rice bed which flows back into the tilapia tank and the cycle repeats every 30 minutes.
The fish provide a natural nitrogen fertilizer to the grow beds. The rock and plant roots are a natural filter for the water and clean, oxygenated water flows back into the tilapia tank promoting healthy growth. The system is designed to provide a constant source of herbs and greens from the top tank. The rice will yield a harvest twice a year which should be able to feed a family of 4 for about a month each time. Over the course of 1 year, the lower tank should yield around 40, 1lb tilapia for the family to eat.
