Our goal is to provide a reliable food source for remote Costa Rican Indian Villages. These small villages are very food insecure with the nearest stores 1 hours away by motorbike and farm land available is still scarce. Added to that, most of the people in the villages are not able to find consistent work and lack funds to purchase food supplies on a regular basis.
These solar powered, self sustaining aquaponics systems will provide reliable food source to these villages. The maintenance free systems will produce rice, vegetables and protein for residents. The 1st phase of aquaponics systems will yield 2 rice crops per year that can feed a family of 4 with a 1 month supply of rice each harvest. Over the course of 1 year, these systems will also yield up to 40, 1lb food grade fish such as catfish or tilapia. The only thing required is feeding the fish and pruning the vegetables and rice.
The systems take up approximately 8x8 area which could provide 1 years worth of food for an individual family.
Our initial goal is to build 2 systems in residential areas of South Costa Rica, Ciudad Neily and Punta Banco. These systems will serve as breeding areas for food grade fish as well as learning tools for educated residents who can assist the Indigenous tribes with trouble shooting and maintenance. Food yield from these systems will go directly to the Ngäbe & Guyami tribes.
Our phase 2 goal is 3 systems per village for rice, protein and vegetable cultivation to begin providing a sustainable food source for the village.
